I’ve been using the new Firefox 4.0 Beta for about a week now and I LUV IT, certainly enough to make a mention here! =P New features are awesome… tabs appearing in Win7 taskbar as if they were separate windows is great, the new way add-ons and extensions are handled and organized is fantastic, new look is quite pretty and a whole load of other new features are great as well. I also like the few new extensions that I’ve seen so far, that work with the new abilities of FF. The retractable add-ons bar for instance is quite handy.

I’ve always been a huge fan of FF’s customizability, and now there’s even more of that to be happy about. I also like many of the technical upgrade and oh, don’t forget the WebGL support. Aaaand the private browsing feature is pretty interesting too. You can check out the full features list here.

The only issue right now is that once you switch to the beta, 90% of your current add-ons will stop working because their version is not compatible with the new Firefix. The thing is, many of these add-ons can technically handle the FF beta, and only get disabled due to the version check. So you have 2 options:

  1. Disable the add-on compatibility check. To do that, go to “about:config” on FF, create a new boolean variable, call it “extensions.checkCompatibility.4.0b” and set it’s value to false. This works, but I DO NOT recommend it. Because this will suddenly enable all your old add-ons, some of which are sure to not work properly on the new FF. As a result all sorts of bugs and malfunctions will start showing up on your new FF. So… kind of a bad idea.
  2. Tweak specific add-ons to work with the new FF. This way, as soon as one of these add-ons starts giving your new FF hick-ups, your going to know it and get rid of the add-on. To do that, you’ll have to download the add-on first which you can do by right clicking on the download/install link of the add-on, even though you’ll see a “not compatible” sign on it. Then rename file extension from “.xpi” to “.zip”, and extract the “install.rdf” file out of the package. Open up the rdf file and find “em:maxVersion” in it, and change it’s value from whatever it is to ” 4.*”. Return the new version of the file to the package, change the extension back to “.xpi” and drop it into FF so that it’ll get installed.

I hope that helps someone. The 2nd one is what I’ve done to most of my extensions, and everything works like a charm so far. Really looking forwards to the final release now!

Spammers On Verse

It was really “interesting” today, when I ended up having to do a bit of an analysis on certain footsteps on my website visitor tracking tools to find out that it’s been in fact people, human beings, who have attacked Verse with stupid commercial posts and some other nonsensical twaddle. Oh, and guess what, some of them even went ahead and posted links on Twitter, to the garbage they had posted to Verse. Here’s a couple of examples [it might be a bot posting the stuff to Twitter though, of that I’m not certain…]:

http://twitter.com/#!/julie86smith/statuses/1207024033464320

http://twitter.com/#!/lutushia/statuses/1298952494260224

Of course the links in the posts now direct to deleted pages… I deleted the contributions of all these users from Verse, and reported them to Twitter. I also made a rather big change to Verse’s registration system today. I’ve changed the code so that it’s no longer possible to simply register an account and start using Verse. New users now have to request for an account, and then one of the admins would have to review their request and permit the account to be created, before the user can use Verse. This isn’t all that conventional for a wiki system… but oh well, people have to misuse absolutely everything, and you end up having to deal with it.

Google Instant!

I think Bing just fell behind in the search engine wars, big time! Today I gave Google Instant a try. Love it. That’s the way to go! Given the recent changes in the Google image search and all the new options, and now this… I think Google is back to being my favourite again! =D

Liked The “Ask Me” Idea So…..

So I decided to create myself an “Ask Box” too [or whatever you like to call it! ;)]. Simple, ask me anything you like and I’ll answer it if I can. =) If you have an account on the website, you can choose to include your user info, or just ask anonymously. Otherwise, it’s basically anonymous unless you decide to include a name. Oh and apparently it’s also possible to add / follow people. So, here’s mine!

  • Evri Buys Radar Networks

And I am not the least bit surprised. After all, we all saw this coming… didn’t we.

About a year ago I came across Evri. After I played around with it a bit and did some inspection, I realized it was simply not interesting. It doesn’t do anything special that hasn’t already been covered by another 10,000 more complete and useful services out there.

With everything that went down with Twine in the past year, it was predicted by a lot of people that I spoke with, that Twine.com had pretty much always been for sale, if you catch my drift. The only thing is, I guess a part of me was always hoping that some big cool company would come along and acquire Twine, and perhaps that way Twine would finally be made into what it was originally supposed to be [or at least what the pitch was!].

Well, the Radar Networks finally got bought today. Twine.com finally got ownEvriTwineed today, and as a result we now have a combination of 2 completely lame projects. On one hand I find this very disappointing. On the other hand, I find it very laughable. =P  What I find even more amusing, is the little “Evri + Twine” logo that they’ve stuck on the top of the Twine pages. It looks to me like it’s saying “here’s how you know we have successfully made a bloody mess of things”.

I can not believe where Twine started, and where it is now, truly and finally, ending….

    More info here and  here.

As I’ve been going through yet another one of those extremely busy periods, I’ve been out of the loop with some of the latest developments in the world of social networks and legal patents. So I hadn’t read or heard about FB’s recent work of art till today. Today I had a conversation with a Good friend, Twain, who kindly brought me in the loop with what’s been going on. Apparently, Facebook has been awarded the patent for “Dynamically providing a news feed about a user of a social network”. Check this link, and this link for the full story.

Well, I’m honestly shocked at what they seem to be getting away with. Actually, on a second though, I basically don’t think they’ll be getting away with this. As I told my friend, I think this is very much like stealing a piece of the ladder that everyone is, or wants to be climbing. And a good number of online services out there have in fact been climbing this ladder as long as Facebook has, if not longer. Orkut is an example of a social network that’s been providing the news feed for a long while now. There are also services with a more specific purpose that do the same.. Last.fm and Goodreads would be examples. And I could bring a dozen other examples just of the top of my head.

So, exactly how does Facebook think that they have a right to be doing this? How is it that they managed to get this patent? Oh well, I think there are reasons I don’t get too close to the worlds of business and law. I’m better off with engineering, math and code. Things that make some logical sense…

But even though I don’t have much of a view on the topic, I have a firm belief that other online services are just not going to accept this. I have a feeling that Facebook has just brought together the ingredients for an upcoming fiasco. Well, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…..

    Verse & OpenID

I love OpenID. =) I really do… I guess it’s obvious by now. I’ve always been intrigued byopenid[1] the idea, so much so that a couple of years ago I started serving my own OpenID on Aasemoon.com.

Recently I decided it was time Verse supported OpenID, and after a few evenings of playing around with the PHP OpenID libraries, now it pretty much does that. The thing is, I have no idea how well this works. A lot of testing has to be done and I’m certain that there are still tons of bugs… but I guess I’ll perfect it in time. =) Also, you can now use your Verse profile as your OpenID, in other OpenID enabled website. So yes Verse serves OpenIDz too now. =) Or at least as far as my testing of it goes….

Buzz: Oops Goog did it AGAIN! xP

Oh come on! I mean… seriously? You have got to be joking! NoGwitter

For the life of me, I cannot believe how fast Google is jumping from one useless project to the next! It feels as if it was just yesterday when Google gave us all a not so sweet surprise with the half baked and hardly usable Google Wave. Now here they go again, this time with the Gwitter. How many of the same thing do we need anyway?

There’s about 50-billion micro blogging services out there right now, but of course Google has found a way to make the Gwitter stand out. You know what it is that all the rest of those services are missing? Well, they DON’T SUDDENLY MAKE YOUR PERSONAL DATA INTO PUBLIC DATA!! Haha, oh yes! Google’s new ridiculous Twitter clone is the only one out there to have a security hole / privacy breach of such magnitude! Upon activating Da Fuzz on your Google account, your connections list is the first to go public, followed by another load of data apparently. And even though you have the option to change that, the default makes your connections list and other pieces of data public without actually asking / waning you.

Of course at the first glance you may not notice the gravity of the situation.. in that case, I suggest you read this pleasantly straight forward article, nicely titled “F*ck You Google”, and you’ll suddenly get a better view of exactly what’s going on.

So, we have a brand new Google service, that doesn’t do anything new, doesn’t look anything particularly appealing, doesn’t involve any sort of innovation in anything except for magnificently breaching your privacy, and yet, people are, and will be, using it. Yay to the brave new world!

    Cheers! =)

Update: Thanks to my good friend Knarfoo for sharing this interesting article. Another good description of the current state of Gwitter.

    Facebook Chat + XMPP

Nice, really really nice! =) Facebook finally did it. FB chat supports XMPP now, and with the latest Trillian release, you can now use Trill’s Jabber / XMPP plug-in to connect to FB chat. All you have to do now, is to first make sure you have the XMPP plug-in added to your Trill, then introduce a new Jabber account, and log on with yourusername@chat.facebook.com. And by the way the username part is case sensitive… as in you have to enter everything in lower case for it to work. I set this up yesterday, and it works like a charm. =) Yaaaaaay!
