Robot Park In Switzerland! =D

Oh wow, would you look at this? Yesterday I came across the coolest news here in this article. Apparently the first robotic amusement park of Europe is being built in Neuchatel [I’ve actually been there! ;)]. Check out the article for more info.

So you can imagine how excited I was to read about this. I feel like a million box… I’m actually going to be there! =D I now have to go see where I can find more information about this. This is absolutely AWESOME, WOOOOOHOOOOOOOWWW! =D

Robosphere[1]

On other fantastic news from the past few days [and there really is so much to say!], ASD’s Rupture won Scene.org awards in 3 categories: best demo, best direction and of course public choice. =) Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! =D

The awards ceremony was held on the 2nd day of Breakpoint 2010. This makes me wonder, since Breakpoint is going away, where is the scene.org awards ceremony going to be held from now on? Hmmm! Anyhow, I give you Rupture [as usual, I suggest you see the actual demo instead of the video]:

Oh my God…. I know I’m about to sound like a bloody fan girl, but honestly I could caresatori-v  even less. =)) I’m usually pretty excited + energetic + happy + LOUD about the things that I’m truly enthusiastic about, and that’s just the way it is. And I like it this way, as it brings me success… anyway….

I luuuuuuuvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv Satori’s demos. So much that I actually check their Pouet page every month or so just to see if they have anything new, even though they hadn’t released anything since 2007. They were one of the very first groups I came to know, and they’re among my top 3 favourite demo groups of all time, and I have a LOT of favourites so… you get the picture. =)

I was beginning to lose hope of seeing new demos from Satori since they hadn’t released anything in such a long while. And that would have been such a shame. So you can imagine the depth of my WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWW when I saw their name pop up on my screen today, as I was watching the demo compo on Breakpoint TV. =) And oh wow, they SO did not disappoint! The demo is a true artistic masterpiece.

What’s interesting is that the Satori demos are like NO other demos. What I mean is, many of the really nice demos that I have seen, have certain elements in common. I’m not saying they look in any way the same, but they have some very basic similarities in their effects, design and direction. But Satori’s demos never have anything in common with anything else out there. They stand out completely, and the totally rule. Same was the case with their BP release. And hey, this one happens to be even better than their own previous demos. All I can say now is that I hope they don’t stop…..

Below is the video recording of the demo. But I suggest you download the actual demo to enjoy the full experience of it.

Round VAIO!

Whoa! To say that I’m impressed would be a total understatement! Sony just hit us with one of the biggest design surprises of the decade. This limited edition  VAIO is in fact, well, ROUND!

I have to admit, even though I recently bought myself a pretty amazing VAIO, I’m still quite seriously tempted to purchase one of these. Check it out!

Hubo Robot!

Here’s another serious competitor for ASIMO. I just came across this article on IEEE Spectrum and was pretty amazed by how natural some of this robot’s moves are. And it actually looks pretty neat too! The wrist + finger movements / control impressed me the most.

Rust Mirror

Oh my world… it this amazing or what? Superb work of art created by “Daniel Rozin”, an artist who’s art responds to the people viewing the art. More info here. Thanks to this guy for the link.

MS Courier:: Not Lost After All! =D

03-05-10courier2[1] A while ago I wrote here that I was no longer certain whether or not MS Courier is still going to come to reality. Well, happily, I just saw this article on Engadget, with some new news on Courier. Apparently this very neat gadget is very much in development, and below you can get an idea of how it will look like. =) YAAAAAAY! Honestly I’m impatiently looking for this one to arrive, I totally want [well, more like need! =))] one!

As I’ve been going through yet another one of those extremely busy periods, I’ve been out of the loop with some of the latest developments in the world of social networks and legal patents. So I hadn’t read or heard about FB’s recent work of art till today. Today I had a conversation with a Good friend, Twain, who kindly brought me in the loop with what’s been going on. Apparently, Facebook has been awarded the patent for “Dynamically providing a news feed about a user of a social network”. Check this link, and this link for the full story.

Well, I’m honestly shocked at what they seem to be getting away with. Actually, on a second though, I basically don’t think they’ll be getting away with this. As I told my friend, I think this is very much like stealing a piece of the ladder that everyone is, or wants to be climbing. And a good number of online services out there have in fact been climbing this ladder as long as Facebook has, if not longer. Orkut is an example of a social network that’s been providing the news feed for a long while now. There are also services with a more specific purpose that do the same.. Last.fm and Goodreads would be examples. And I could bring a dozen other examples just of the top of my head.

So, exactly how does Facebook think that they have a right to be doing this? How is it that they managed to get this patent? Oh well, I think there are reasons I don’t get too close to the worlds of business and law. I’m better off with engineering, math and code. Things that make some logical sense…

But even though I don’t have much of a view on the topic, I have a firm belief that other online services are just not going to accept this. I have a feeling that Facebook has just brought together the ingredients for an upcoming fiasco. Well, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…..

Win7 & Multiple Desktops

Multiple desktops on Windows is something that I’ve wanted [well more like needed] for pretty much ever. Well actually what I really want is an all connected scrollable cc817881.desktops2(en-us,MSDN.10)[1] workspace, but getting my hands on an app that does this, has proven even more difficult than something for multiple desktops. There is only a single working application out there that creates a scrollable workspace on Win, and it’s way too old. Doesn’t really work on Win7 at all. I had come across virtual desktop apps that create multiple workspaces in the past, but that was long time ago and I didn’t really like what I saw then. So recently, I started searching again…. And here’s my findings:

Lets just say that to my experience, out of the bazillion virtual desktop apps out there, and I mean including the free and commercial ones both, I’ve only found 1 that works on a 64-bit Win7. The application is called “Desktops”, it’s free, and it’s available through Microsoft TechNet. It gives you 4 desktops that can be reached via shortcut keys or the tray icon. It has some limitations, including the fact that Aero style only runs on the main desktop, and you cant drag application windows from one desktop to the other, and a few other small issues. But at least it works, it’s NOT buggy at all and it uses a rather negligible amount of memory and other system resources.

So for the moment, this is what I’m going to be using.. until either me or one of you finds something better. You can download the app here.
