The million year old blog
2 Jun
As you may have already noticed through my twine feed, the IDC 2008 final competing teams have been selected, and the application demos are now available to watch through the IDC website. Similar to previous years: 5 teams, 5 fantastic demos, and 1 heck of a dilemma when it comes to voting, which you can do as of the end of June. =) The competing teams this year are Cocoon, Fairlight & TBL, MFX, Inque and Still.
As for how I feel about the demos, well, I really can’t tell yet. I’ve watched each demo 3 times so far but I still have quite a few more rounds to go. But so far, I can say this, Still always has a way of making me glad I watched the demo [hence the pic!], and to top that, they brought in the duckie again! =D
I have to add that the demos are not available for downloading as of yet, but I will let you know as soon as they are. So for now, go watch some demos and enjoy!
P.S.: Does the “fat guy” in Cocoon’s demo remind any of you of “Baron Vladimir Harkonnen” of Frank Herbert’s “Dune”? Cause that’s who he reminds me of somehow! =)
UPDATE: Well, I think Optimus’ comment just confirmed my suspicion. The application demos are almost all parts of previously released demos, except for some reason [I could be very well wrong about this] the Fairlight & TBL demo seems newish! So lets just wait and see if there will be other demos popping up.

Wait, really? Intel demo time already? Isn’t this supposed to happen only once a year?
Hey something’s missing! Where’s ASD??
@ Team: It HAS been a year!
ASD is not competing this year. [And give’em a break, 2 major releases just happened!]
I like the Still one too. But is it me or is the Fairlight & TBL demo just very very short?
And there’s Cocoon with that fat guy again. That demo is a technical wonder, but I don’t like the fat guy, it’s somehow creepy!
The Fairlight demo is nice, but how come they never change style? Any recent demo I have seen from them is using pretty much the same effects, the same style, the same everything. It’s very nice but it’s always the same.
Still demo and Inque demo are both very nice.
I don’t know if I like the MFX demo better or the Still one. I also second what Rene said.
Beautiful, I actually like all of them. The fat guy really is a bit creepy, but that demo is still awesome.
What J.J. said. Also they all seem to have good music.
Christ the fat dude is ugly!
Other than that, all very nicely done.
Ha! Baron Harkonnen? Now that you mentioned… yeah! Yeah the big fat floating evil character… yeah! I can see the resemblance!
I like the Inque demo the most, but the Still demo has better music.
Great groups and great demos. But honestly without ASD something is really missing.
Guys did any of you have problems seeing the Fairlight demo? For some reason it’s not playing here!
@ Raj: Not really, although it’s somehow very short it seems.
Still demo is the best. The Cocoon demo is very advanced and all that, but I simply don’t like the harshness in it.
I like the MFX demo the best, although I think I’ve seen it before in their own demos.
In general I liked the last year’s demos better. But yeah MFX and Still have submitted great demos.
The TBL and Fairlight demo is so far my favorite, but I also have to watch them all again. 🙂
I like them all! Don’t know how I’m gonna vote.
They all have good music, but I pretty much only liked the Still demo as a whole.
I am confused for a while.
The demos at the videos, they have already been released before (search on pouet for the latest demos of these teams). I thought I’d see new demos. Or are the videos I see here only a representation of their previous works and not the competition submissions?
Well, I guess it’s true. I think. The demos at the videos are previous works of the teams (The Still demo was from last year’s intel demo competition, cocoon was from assembly, Antiphore from some demoparty, etc. Can’t find the Fairlight demo though). I guess we still have to wait for the end of June to see the real new demos coming.
@ Optimus, yeah I believe that’s what they mean by “Application” demos, although it’s had me and apparently everyone else confused too. At first I thought it was just that some of the elements from the previous demos had been used but you’re right, other than the TBL & Fairlight demo [which is my actual cause of confusion! Why would they have a new demo if these were just… well… ] seems like they’re all previously done work.
