The million year old blog

Well, yes. And I have to mention that this isn’t just about BlueHost, it concerns a lot of other currently popular hosting services, that offer huge web space for not such a big price. Well, let me tell you about my experience with BlueHost in the last 48 hours. To start with, let me give you a part of the official BlueHost terms of use, that you can find on their website. I have to mention that the TOS page is basically nowhere to be found, unless you search for it in the help center. Yeah, very informative. If you want to see the whole page, it’s here. But here’s the section of interest to me:
“No material that provides sells or offers to sell the following: controlled substances, illegal drugs and drug contraband, weapons, pirated materials, instructions on making, assembling or obtaining illegal goods or weapons to attack others. Information used to break, copyright, violate the trademark of or to destroy others property or information. Information used to illegally harm any people or animals. We do not allow pornography, nudity, sexual products, programs or services. Escort services are not allowed or other content deemed adult related.”
This is the only thing that they are saying about “copy righted material”. That you don’t have the right to sell them. I add to it myself: don’t share them either, basically don’t violate the bloody copyright laws. But hey, what part of any copyright law, OR the bloody terms of service, says that you are not allowed to back up your legally collected copyrighted material on your web space? What if you’re using the God forsaken 1500 Gigs that “supposedly” they should give you, to back up parts of your hard drive? And what if that backup is 1 – password protected, 2 – outside of your public web folder, or to say it in simple terms, what if nobody but you has access to that back up? Exactly what are you violating that way? Well, let me tell you what gets violated that way: BlueHost’s shameful marketing scam. They tell you that you have 1500 Gigs, but they know that most people use only something about 20 Megs [I’m also quoting parts of this from Genox, as I was speaking to him about it yesterday]. They advertise 1500 Gigs to get your attention, but they never have the kind of resources to allow people to use 1500 Gigs each. Which means that if you, as one of all these supposedly clueless customers, actually want to use some of the space, they will freak out and start pushing you with limitations that they never ever mentioned anything about, in their terms of service. You just wake up one morning, and figure out that your website has been suspended, without any sort of warning, and not even your email addresses work. I mean how un-considerate and un-professional is that? Then you call them, and they tell you that you are “violating” their terms of service, and you are “violating” copyright laws, while you were doing no such thing. They tell you that unless you remove everything you have in your personal folders, they will not give you access to anything. It doesn’t matter how many times you try to tell them that this is wrong, they simply won’t listen. They use the fact that you need your website back online, and push you to do exactly what they say: to never use what you have paid for. Yes, this is no kidding, this just happened to me. And then I emailed their “abuse” department, asking for an explanation about this, which so far they haven’t responded to, and something tells me that they won’t.
But hey wait, this is not all, it gets even better. You know what they primarily made me remove from the server? PUBLIC DOMAIN EBOOKS, AND LEGALLY FREE MUSIC! Yes, no kidding, how stupid is that? I had, in my public folders, eBooks that are legally free and fine to share and distribute, and music that happens to be made by my boyfriend [Genox] who releases his music for free, and somehow I’m pretty sure that he doesn’t mind me sharing his music! Yes, the bloody BlueHost support didn’t listen to me when I tried to tell them that this is free material!! They kept telling me that until I remove it, they won’t re-activate my services. What does that tell me? That this is not at all about TOS or Copyright or law or anything like that, this is about the fact that they’re lying about the 1500 Gigs, and they’re just counting on it that with the kind of limitations they apply, you can never use the damn thing. I mean exactly how many full text websites can you have to fill up 1500 Gigs? Is everybody going to start their own eBay or something?
Now as I mentioned, this is not just about BlueHost. It goes for bunch of hosting services out there, but I would say BlueHost is the worst because:
1 – They don’t mention anything in their TOS about their backwards policies,
2 – Their live chat support STILL tells you that it’s ok to have copyrighted material as long as you don’t share them [I tried this with a fake name yesterday!],
3 – Other similar hosting services won’t get b****y with you if you’re using their space with legally free material, and they understand the concept of “public domain books”. Or at lest that’s what their phone support tells me,
4 – The BlueHost support “lady” got quite offensive with me yesterday and hung up the phone on me, when she basically couldn’t say anything in response to my logical argument.
So, ladies and gentlemen, this is _THE_ one most ugly behavior I have ever experienced from a company offering a service. In one act, BlueHost has managed to surpass even Rogers and Network Solutions. Good job, really!
So here’s what’s going to happen now. I already have full back up of my websites and databases and everything, and I’m fully prepared to move to another host if they bother me again. Actually given the current horrible downtimes of BlueHost, that would not be too bad anyway. AND, I have just put back my legally free material online, and I have absolutely no intention of removing them. And I have every intention of filling up the web space I’m paying for, with completely un-copyrighted material that can be very useful to my website viewers. Lets see what happens.

Ok listen, what they have done to you is fully and completely illegal. You have to fill a complaint against them. I mean it.
The whole think looks like “Oh, someone’s using it actually, frickin hell!”-behaviour. It’s not good business for them if you’re using 500GB of their valuable RAID5 space. Because they can sell the same 500GB to about 1000 customers who all will not use more than 500 megs and they will all feel great, knowing that they *could* use this much and think “wow, bluehost is f***ing generous, thumbs up!” .. but the truth is in the details ..
It’s all about the marketing. Make the numbers bigger and people are happy. Add a XXL coke to that XXL burger and people will crave it, even tho they can’t even use the energy.. and hell, it actually kills you if you use this kinds of services! 🙂
I suggest looking for a more reasonable hosting provider, maybe one only offering 20gb for a good price .. but at least you can use it and the people are usually a lot friendlier at small companies, too. And they know what Creative Commons is about et al .. those guys are just pissed off because you actually cost THEM money if you use the space they offer for more than 10% with their extremely discount prices. That’s not what you deserve ..
Well, I belive that Genox already said all there was to say.
What will bake their noodles later, is that they don’t quite know who they’ve ticked off. How many of the top high-tech nerds of the world have subscribed to this weblog’s RSS again? 😉
WOW! How bad can marketting scams get? This is horrible! They had no right treating you this way!
Thank you for claryfing the facts here. I was just thinking about signing up for their service. When I search for reviews, they are mostly good reviews, but the problem is that none of the websites with reviews look like a real person’s writing. Or they are talking about the upfront matters, not things that are in between the lines. It’s good to read from a real person with a real experience. There is now no way in hell that will use Bluehost.
1500 thumbs down to bluehost. this is a freakin’ disaster.
Oh hell, and they did that to you on your new year day? Well I hope everyone reads this article and bluehost looses all customers. They suck.
I wonder if this guys have ever heard about something called “customer care”.
Yeah and the last thing you can trust on this sort of thing are the so called hosting reveiw websites. I wonder how much they’re paying those ones.
Holy cow this is scary! You have NOT been violating anything and don’t ever accept that. This is like saying that if you store your paper books or music cds or movies or anything else like that in a public storage space and lock the doors, you are violating the copy rights. In addition making you remove all your space consuming material while there is nothing in their TOS, is their illegal action. People who don’t understand this much, how do they manage a hosting company?
Being an artist myself, I’m always very critical about all these copyright discussions of the current era. I’m against pirating and all of that. But as someone who is a fan of digital rights, I don’t see how this blue host had any right of treating you that way, when you haven’t done anything wrong. If your personal archives are not reachable by outside, (in basic, if for reaching this data the person will have to have your credit card number), I can say with certainty that this does not oppose copyright law or the digital millenium act. On the other hand, the fact that their tos mentions nothing, as already mentioned by others, makes it illegal for them to stop you from using your webspace, specially about the non copyrighted items. Too bad I’m not an american lawyer. I feel like putting this company in their place.
Hey all, thanks for your comments and your support. Too bad I don’t live in the states, and I don’t have too much money on my hands, otherwise yes, I would go ahead and sue them by now. I’m actually going to collect some links, to all the blogs and websites that say something about BlueHost’s bad service, and post them here. Let me know if you have suggestions for better hosting services.
Thank you!
Gee wow, Bluehost just proved to be run by a bunch of illiterates!
The customer service person actually hung up on you? Somebody has to teach them some manners.
Unfortunately nowadays the hosting business seems to be full of this sort of scam, and the available reviews are worth nothing. I don’t know how you’re supposed to find a good host.
Disasterous behavior really.
I don’t know any free website service without stupid problems. Do you know some?
Some free accounts have adds (I am ok with that though), some don’t allow external linking, some have upload quota limits, some change their policy, do you know a good one? I’d like to know some of the free popular servers actually who doesn’t have any of these problems, even though I am ok in the demoscene.gr server lately (well it’s free too, but for sceners :).
@ Optimus: Free ones are right now even worse than paid ones. When Bluehost which is a very much paid host treats their customers like this, what do you expect from the free hosts? As mentioned, it’s a very scamy business right now.
Hey Optimus, well like Dino said… even a good number of the current paid hosting services are complete nightmares, let alone the free ones. Just whatever you do, don’t read the online reviews when getting yourself a host!
As for Twine… so far it’s looking great. =) It’s quite a bit different than the social networking websites out there. Hopefully it will prove it’s uses even more soon.
And as for Norooz =D yup I’m pretty much having 2 or even 3 new years per yer, as well as other celebrations and such. I know that the Chinese and Arabic new year are also different dates. So if you know some people from any of these nationalities, make sure you’re around in their new year. =))
I’ve come across all sorts of hosting services in the past 10 years. From geocities to the most expensive (yet useless) “high performance” hosting services. The only good hosting (yet affordable) I’ve come across is my current one, cyon.ch. Ok, you don’t get 1.5TB, but the price is good (in swiss terms) and well, they’re nice and devoted. They go forward, they have the same technology as for example bluehost offers. I call it the “medium spectrum hosting”. 🙂 It’s the segment of hosting companies that give you no dreamnumbers of space and cost, but you get what you pay for.
It all depends on your specific needs tho. If your number one priority is haveing ruby on rails or 500gb space makes a big difference.. It’s very hard to recommend something. There are tons of companies and as already mentioned, most “review sites” are most probably scams, like all those funky labels they use to put on their site ..
The optimal, yet most expensive option is a dedicated root server somewhere in a liberal country in europe. It’s expensive, but you can do whatever you want, as long as you don’t violate policies or the law. You can run whatever software you want on the server and no one will have access to your data other than you.
I just want to repeat what everybody else has said, and add that obviously Bluehost is managed by a pack of unprofessional money hungry sadistic idiots, and their action against you has been completely unjustified. Now if you want to stay there and fight them, I understand and respect your attitude, but just make sure you keep getting updated backups of all your data, and have a couple of hosts in mind for quick switching. Also don’t make the mistake of going to Hostmonster, it’s managed by the same idiots as Bluehost.
What’s funny is that they have a positive reviews page!!!!!!! Surely when you have so many customers you can find some clueless guys and galls to write you some nice stuff. But I wonder what they do with the real reviews, the negative ones. Throw them in the garbage can I suppose. What a bunch of lunatics.
Really? bluehost is the same as hostmonster? Too bad I was gonna suggest hostmonster. 🙁
I had a bad experience with blue host too! I wanted to transfer my domain name to another company and although I unlocked the domain, I still have not been able to do the transfer. They are nightmare host.
OK gross, gross, and again GROSS! So this is how they manage to offer 1500 Gb? By lying and tricking? And they know that when they don’t give you your rights, there’s not much most people can do. You are either not in the US, or even if you are, it will cost you too much to go after a big company. This sort of business people should be put to jail.
Bluehost management are losers. Everybody should know that by now…
At some far point in the past BlueHost was a more or less fine service, but that is no longer the case. They are starting to show severe signs of turning into one of those monster companies that don’t much care how they treat their customers. It’s the sad facts.
I can relate.
Bluehost is one of the worst web hosting companies on the net.
Bluehost=crappy uptime
Bluehost=crappy email service
Bluehost=crappy customer service
Bluehost Blues!
Bluehost Urban Dictionary Definition
1. bluehost
Extremely poor web hosting. The worst of the worst in web hosting.
Hey stupid you just signed up for a bluehost web hosting company.
Haha I just thumbed up the urban dictionary definition. It’s so bloody true! Unbelievable….
I agree with what Sye said. Maybe at some point they were a little better, but now they are just crappy.
I also can relate to this.
Bluehost = True Bastards.
Bluehost really is the worst of them. I wasted a lot of money on them. Big mistake.
Bluehost TOS another mockery of decent web hosting.
Read more about Bluehost TOS
Bluehost people seem to also run a couple of more crappy hosting services. Like 1 disaster is not enough already.
Bluehost / Hostmonster / Fastdomain, are the Frankenstein hosting creations of Matt Heaton. I view them as the evil trinity of web hosting companies. There is nothing good about any of them.
Scaaaarrrrryyyy… Zombie hosting services.
And they still make tons of money. Just by scamming people. How is that fair? 🙁
I wonder for how long they’re going to be able to keep up with this.
Bluehost = online nightmare
Well, this is a common problem.
My current webhost – byethost.com – is not thaat big, but it offers 100GB space for $6.99 per month.
And nobody cares when I upload DVD packed in exe file, then I create online 10 GB large backup in tar.gz or zip 🙂
The good thing is, that you can check usage of physical hard drive (RAID, I suppose).
And when I mailed the support service that I need more than 32MB ram for my scripts, they simply gave me 128MB.
But I’m not sure if I can recommend it, they had some larger downtime recently.
Thanks zzzemfira89, that’s pretty good info to have. I know that no hosting is currently perfect, but I really am looking into moving to another host at some point and knowing about this one is good help. =)
How about saying, “Fine, I’ll take the stuff down, but I’ll replace it with a thousand txt files full of “1”s, it’s my space right?” If you can just generate and send the stuff, then they might just change their minds, as they will know that you are totally within your rights! If they start zipping your stuff, switch to random numbers! That should encourage them to be reasonable. Hopefully!
=D Yeah that’s something that a couple of my friends were discussing a while back too. Writing the script will be the simplest thing to do. But the thing is, I’m absolutely sure they’ll then suspend the account saying something like “you’re abusing the service” or so. I mean they actually suspended someone’s website because he had a mention of Poker on his website. [Apparently the actual reason was that at some point he had ran an experimental app that had a high memory usage]. But still, I will certainly have that in mind. 😉
The worse host is always the one you are using. You only have problems with it while all others have potential flawless services… …until you switch from the old one to a new one. Then, as magic, the former perfect hosting provider turns into a pumpkin and becames a nightmare.
I use Bluehost for several clients and projects, sometimes we have problems, but in the average, they are not so bad…
@ Rodrigo:
Your comment would make sense if you were talking about people who don’t have that much experience with different hosting services. The writer of this blog and I myself are well aware of what’s out there, and what the options are. We are not naive enough to be calling any existing services “perfect”, but I suggest you read the story here again and you’ll see that this is one of the “worse”. And this is not an isolated incident with bluehost.
I hear you Aasemoon. These guys have the worst customer support in the planet. Not only are they dumb ass morons because of which you can’t be certain if they can help you out but they don’t show basic courtesy like they have never learn it all their lives.
I pity the families they belong to, their parents probably never learnt any manners to tach them in first place.
Blue Host is the worst. I have a small e-commerce site that has been with them for a year and a half. I woke up this morning to find my website offline, my email not working, and unable to log in to my cpanel. I don’t have any protected content on my site. I have never sent a SPAM email. I haven’t done anything that could possibly violate anyone’s terms and conditions. They have completely shut down my business and will not give me a hint as to why. After going back and forth with support and no answers, their last response is that “sales will get back to me shortly”. They have all my files and my sales database and apparently they are not giving it back. They are not giving me any reasons or answers. Just 100% gone.
Wow…. the above comment, VERY scary situation. =( I don’t understand how can a hosting company of such magnitude be so irresponsible towards their customers!
I got news for you guys…half the comments about how good or bad a host is are by the hosts themselves spreading good/bad PR about themselves or the other guys. I host with bluehost and have no problems with them. When I have had an issue their tech support has been by far better than most other tech support I’ve ever dealt with (sitting on the phone with samsung support trying to get info on why a harddrive wasn’t working took hours…) Anyhow, I just had to laugh at this comment thread since it’s so biased. I’m sure if the owner did an IP check half of the posts would point back to either the same people or some of the hosts themselves.
If you haven’t figured it out yet…shared hosting always has issues. That’s the nature of the game. If you want rock solid hosting you are going to have to pay for it. You don’t get it for 5 dollars a month.
Oh, I review hosting and this sort of thing for a living so I’m know I’m telling you the truth. I have talked to many of the bigger hosts and am quite familiar with what goes on. It’s really funny in the end, but I guess that’s the internet for you.
Ernie: Excuse me but congratulations on being so amusingly dumb. It’s even more amusing if you actually write hosting reviews, and still can’t tell the difference between a real blog and author, and a fake one made for ‘other’ purposes… We’re all real you smart arse, and BlueHost really does suck. If you haven’t seen it before, it’s just your lack of experience.
Stay away from Bluehost. They will shut you down for no stated reason. They will shut down your site and your email and then insult you when you try to work with them to resolve an issue. Google “Best Web Hosters”, then pick “Top-10-…”. You’ll see Blue Host right up there. Now, whois Top-10… and you’ll trace them right to BlueHost. What kind of company uses tricks like this to lure customers? A disreptable one. RUN AWAY FROM BLUEHOST.
I think that something needs to be said about their ‘unlimited space’ bait and switch.. I was suspended and then banned from the forum as well. Here is some of what I asked:
I wrote a post recently that described my suspension. My account was suspended because I purportedly was ‘backing up or archiving files’. I asked the question: What is a backup or archive with respect to a site? If I put zip files on the site is that a prohibited backup? This is important because BH will suspend your account WITHOUT NOTICE if it ‘feels’ you are backing up files.
So my question remains valid. BH needs to state what a backup or archive is or is not. The Terms and Conditions does not tell us.
This is very important, and a number of people have been suspended. If I have a client with a site that includes a zip or archive BH may ‘feel’ this is objectionable. Then WITHOUT NOTICE BH may shut down or suspend the ENTIRE HOSTED ACCOUNT. That’s right, every client that you sold a site to will be suspended. So there is a huge revenue concern here.
Scam yes
to day i cancelled my bluehost account after they suspended my account because my index pages were using too many of their resources. they suspended the account, wouldn’t allow me access tomake any changes…all this for a wordpress blog about mountaineering…no e-books, no free music, no nudity no porn, nothing, zip, nada…is this the first time my account has been suspended – no, but sure is the last. I vow to slag off bluehost whenever and where ever i can. stuff you twat heaton
THIS IS RIGHT.
BLUEHOST IS ONLY WEBSITE HOSTING. YOU HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR WEBSPACE AND IT WILL ONLY IF YOU WANT TO USE IT, AS PART OF YOUR WEBSITE, THEY CARE WHEN PEOPLE ABUSE TO USE THE WEBSPACE TO STORE THERE HARD DISK OR JUST TO HAVE A BACKUP STORAGE.
BLUEHOST HAVE BEEN MY SUPPLIER SINCE 3 YEARS NOW, AND I HAVE AROUND 25 WEBSITE, NO PROBLEMS AT ALL.
You all shoud know that I hacked the entire bluehost 11 months ago! They also lack security. It was too damn easy.
And yes they lie when they say to offer 1500GB, how can they do that if a server for shared customers has only 1 HDD about 1Tb
I am sure this "Ernie" guy (probably not his real name) is a paid troll from Bluehost. I bet he is like the VP of Business Development or has some other peon title with them. Anyways Ernie you are low life scum for promoting a total crap webhosting company. Ernie you remind me of a guy who would sell his own mother for a nickel. Hey Ernie, I am sure karma will wax your ass.
@Previous comment: Well I [owner of this blog] agree with you about this Ernie character… Specially since he accuses all of us complaining here of being "unreal". He says:
"I got news for you guys…half the comments about how good or bad a host is are by the hosts themselves spreading good/bad PR about themselves or the other guys."
Well excuse me, I wrote this post about Bluehost and I assure you, I'm a very very real person with no connection to either bluehost or any other hosting companies. If you have any doubts about that you can go to Aasemoon.com and read the "About" page. Also as you may have noticed, this blog is being written since 1998, so the blog is quite real as well. I also personally know a great number of people who commented here, all of them as real as myself. What "Ernie" is saying, is only a reflection of what he himself actually is. As the above comment mentions, he is in fact quite possibly an employee of BlueHost, posting a comment here with a fake name….
Bluehost provided by far and away the worst hosting experience ever. I can't advise anyone strongly enough to leave this company alone.
