The million year old blog
3 Aug
Yes, it finally happened. After weeks of dealing with all sorts of ridiculous problems, we were finally able to hold the second Demo Display, which turned out to be well worth all the trouble. Given the amazing experience of the first show, and the amount of positive feedback that I received, we decided to be a little more organized and do some actual preparation for the second one. [For anyone who might not know this, the first show happened out of the blue and based on a sudden mental spark that I had!] Although the preparations didn’t exactly happen in the most smooth manner, but we managed to get things done and send out the news to our Engee and Artzee friends and post some flyers for the rest of the world, on time. As a result of that, the crowd was considerably larger than the first time. The show was huge….a huge emotional outburst. I don’t think I had ever seen Artzeez and Engeez agree so much….let alone going crazy over the same thing. Once again my Artzee friends did an awesome job helping me running the show. In addition I had the luxury of having 2 very special friends with me, who came to Toronto just for this. Soren, Kay [KayOS], you guys rule.
I had actually came up with a solid list of the demos that I wanted to show this time, but as the crowd grew larger, we decided to prolong the show. As a result I was happily able to add a few more favorites to the list, including a couple of demos from the last display. So here’s what we showed:
And of course to close the show we listened to a couple of great tracks:
Now as you’re suspecting I’m going to talk a little about the demos that we watched, and I’d be glad to know what you thought of each. The size of the crowd this time made it impossible for me to gather what everyone had to say about each demo, so lets do that here. But first I suppose I should mention a few facts, based on some interesting questions that I’ve received lately.
Nope, I’m not a scener, neither are most of the people reading this blog. I came to learn about the Demoscene just recently [although I had seen some rather old demos a while ago]. Yup, I code a lot, Yup, I do some graphic design too, but Nope, I haven’t ever done anything remotely related to creating a demo. Currently most of the coding that I’m doing is Microchip Assembly anyway. Given the way I came across Demoscene first, [watching Iconoclast completely confused & without the slightest idea of what was going on and with my jaw resting somewhere on the floor the whole time and enjoying the experience immensely that is], I’ve developed a tendency to pay more attention to the eye-candy/ear-candy aspects of the demos. Same applies to most of my friends here. [Not that I can ever completely ignore the behind-the-scenes!] Basically, we gathered to watch the demos for the joy of it. 🙂
The people who were present at the first display, came to the second one expecting particularly to see some more ASD demos. That, and the fact that me and my gang are huge fans, were the reasons for us to start the show with ASD’s trilogy [and to include 5 ASD demos in the show of course :D]. ASD’s trilogy is a superbly artistic symbolization of the 3 basic elements: Air [Antidote], Fire [Aphorism] and Water [Ambience]. Given all the discussions that were raised among the crowd specially over the “fire”, I believe I should present here the very helpful explanation that aMUSiC of ASD has posted on Pouet:
“The trilogy is focused on the Aristotle’s element line of Aether, Fire and Water. Aphorism is the Fire part. You can control fire up to a certain extent, but fire is always unpredictable both in its movements and constraint. The various backbone synch points and imagery is depicting the control and constrain of the fire, while the distortions and artifacts are representing the randomness and unpredictability of the flames, that however begin with a seed.. the flammable material (which is the music and its frequencies). The style of the music is harsh and expands into a multitude of frequencies to show the wildness and mercilessness of fire.” What seemed very interesting to me was, although to a rather minor extent, it was apparent that each part of the trilogy seemed to be more appealing to a group of people with rather similar tempers! I’d definitely appreciate it if you people let me know whether you observed something similar. What I do know is that a theater room full of people was on fire while watching each part of this masterpiece! 🙂
After a the trilogy, came the only Amiga demo of the show, Ocean Machine by The Black Lotus. Of course I was pretty curious to see what everyone would think of the Amiga demo and watch some reactions. And of course I wasn’t disappointed; having enjoyed watching this demo as much as I have, naturally I was hoping that the crowd would enjoy it as well, and gladly I should say that apparently they did. It seemed that the scene with the black dancer touched the hearts of most of the viewers, and I really didn’t have to go asking around to figure that one out. I just had to stand behind the panel and observe the reactions! 😉 In addition, the incredible sound track of this demo turned into a common favorite.
The next demo to go on the screen was Tokyo by xplsv. Yeah the same bloody demo that got me mistyping [yeah I know that most of you know what I’m talking about since you all had your ball making a huge fuss out of my tiny typo! :P]; the significance being the fact that my speech skills resembled my spelling skills for a few hours after watching that demo. But hey, it wasn’t just me! The colors, the awesome music and all the beautiful effects in this demo managed to create the Tokyo feeling for the whole crowd, and from what I could see, it was quite an enjoyable one too. Another interesting fact is that no one out of that crowd has so far told me that the demo was too slow for them. Anyone thought so? Let me know. Personally I think the slow pace was a must for this one, in order to have “the” effect. Anyhow; off to the next part.
Update: Since a lot of people were asking for this, do check aMUSiC’s comment regarding the ocean machine lyrics. [Yup, half a gallon Mustard/day for me from now on!]
Important Update: Ok I have to add this here so it won’t get lost in the comments pile: Starting from the show day, I’ve received so many “who did what in the where” questions regarding the producers of the demos, a lot of which I honestly don’t know the answers to. True, I do a whole lot of reading up and tracking down, and I do have “some” info, but I can not possibly have the answers to the kind of detailed questions you seem to have. So I suggest that you check out the group pages on www.pouet.net and from there find the website URLs of the groups that you have questions about [that is if they have one], and you probably know what to do after that. I also have to mention this: NO I won’t post those questions on pouet.net BBS. I’m still enjoying my life. If you like, you can try that yourselves. 🙂

wow you’ve started up on the report already? great stuff. Waiting for the rest.
YEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA that was FUUUUUNNNNNNN!! Thank you Aasemoon for everything.
Hell of an experience this show…
Oh my God I dont even know what to say! I have no clue were to start… those demos… all so amazing! Gosh I need to concentrate… 😀
Yeah it would be a great idea if you all started talking about what you liked and what not. It would be great to know what everyone thought of the demos.
What not? I don’t think so! They were all AMAZING!
Ok, I meant what you might have enjoyed a bit less! Ok now? 😛
Thinking about it now…there are actually many more that I would like to show someday…..
Well it sure as hell was a great collection! 🙂
Aasemoon you totally rock. You took care of everything for this event and it was a hellish amount of work. Thank you and congrats for your unbelievably high amount of energy!
Thanks Ricky; Luckily I had some great help too. 🙂 Thanks again for showing up. I hope you enjoyed the show.
The display was awesome. I missed the first one and I hadn’t actually seen any demos before, and this was such a great surprise. Thank you for arranging the event.
I have to see O Kyklos Tis Zwis again. Instead of watching the screen I was wathcing Aasemoon’s face the whole time. You know what I mean if you were there….. :>
Yeah well Soren’s face was even more entertaining believe me! 🙂
Chloral Hydrate…Dune…yes…
TOKYO YES, YES, YES, YES, YES AND YES!
ASD rules again. The trilogy was out of this world. The whole fire-air-water idea is massive. Kudos.
The amiga demo was so unbelievable. One of the best that one.
How unlucky of me to miss the show! 🙁 I shoud have taken a trip to Toronto too. These demos are all great. Seeing them on the big screen should be something.
Yeah it really was something. The demos shown in the second display were all amaizng. The show was well organized and the turn out was BIG. Good job with everything. 🙂
I had been finally expecting to read the report of the second screening. It’s great that you organize such things around your place. In the way you described your and your friends feelings, it seemed to be a lovable experience, to gather together for demowatching, something that usually happens here only in demoparties (and it’s more than a year the last greek party took place :P). I wish I was there. That’s the spirit!
The demo list is a great one. Except of the ASD masterpieces, some of my favorite ones are Ocean Machine (great music, I’ve been listening to it for a long), o kyklos tis zwhs (Sooooooo cute, I was on the wild compo at Pixelshow when this showed up, gotta watch this again!), Arise, Lego Mania, Electric Kool Aid, Heaven7 and maybe several others. The only ones I hadn’t seen was the Satori demos and I am currently downloading these.
Looking forward for the next part(s) of the screening report 🙂
Optimus: Glad to see you’re reading the report, yes it was quite a memorable event indeed. Everyone seemed to enjoy watching the demos. As for the Satori demos, they are of a somewhat different style ay? 🙂
Above guy’s a scener ay?
Yup, see: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=17684
OMG OMG OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG rock n’ role from begining to the end! The show was just incredible. I loved everything, demos, tracks, people who came, thank you X 100000000 for everything. XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOX Aasemoon! 🙂
“Screeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeam as loud as you can..” I couldn’t really understad the lyrics but well since you and Soren were singing with it I got this much! 😀
Again… again…. again… once more… again… again… 😛
Once more… again… just once… again… more please… again… 😉
Ok that’s it! I’m going with you next time. :S
Now quit bragging for pete’s sake!
In Luv With The Perfect Luv!
Are you watching asm? It’s interesting, they were just talking about the idea of sharing the demos with the art circles, something that you just did!
Dear Anonymous, yup I’m watching and I did notice that part as well. I guess the idea of showing something new to people who haven’t seen it before is always something to talk about. Thanks for your attention. 🙂
Scream as loud as you can,
to the moon our music will be soon
(cheesy ain’t it? ehehehehe)
– aMUSiC/ASD
lol, Well it’s great party material anyway! 🙂
Come on, the lyrics are nice and they have to go with the music genre too right? 😀
Yes yes I’ve been waiting for you to start talking about the demos! Trilogy was AWESOME.
ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES, ASD RULES…..
ASD rules, rocks, owns and…yeah you get the idea.
From the trilogy I liked the water a lot, although I enjoyed all of them much.
Trilogy was awesome from begining to the end. I loved all 3 parts. Seeing them on the big screen was like an out of body experience of some sort!
Aasemoon you are right, people with different personalities seemed to show more interest in certain parts. I could see that the artzeez were more hypnotized over the water part while engeez seemed to like the fire better.
Me votes fire. 🙂
wow ASD does it again! Man the trilogy, and hell why doesn’t anyone talk about Dream Child man? that was frackin’ awesome!
jko, we’re sort of going over the display part by part, that’s why no one has spoken about some other amazing demos either. Don’t worry dude, we’ll get to it. 🙂
I think fire was my fave part. But then like Aasemoon said in the show, each part had something different to offer.
OMG the whole concept for the trilogy is just perfect. Lovely. Thanks a lot. 🙂
Oh God…somebody shoot me please! Oana you were there? How the heck did I manage not to see you? I hope you had fun. 🙂
Cutie pie when I got there you were hidden in mountains of laptops and some other weird stuff, behind the panel (beside the screen). 😀 Alicia and Katie were with me too. The show was truly awesome and we were all having a ball really. This trilogy that you just mentioned was deep stuff. Great work of art. 😉
What I noticed was that most people seemed more interested in either the fire or the water parts, while my favorite was in fact the air part!
I think you could obserbe the properties of water and fire rather easily in their parts, but I don’t know what can be said about the air part.
I can’t even chose one! I loved all the 3 parts. The music for water was probably the best though.
Ok we all know that ASD rules so stop bothering yourself trying to chose one ok? 😀
Gosh the fire part was BEAUTIFUL! so were the other parts but the fire part was something different. YEAH ASD IS DA BEST!
No, not shoot you, shoot me! I missed out the event due to a stupid car problem! :S Gosh it seems like I should just go die now….
No still shoot me, because it seems like I’ve actually managed to miss a whole load of people!
Gosh my knee still hurts….but I’d do it again if you throw another one of these! I loved the trilogy by the way.
jko, put Windex on it!
LOL Aasemoon! 😀
Water! WATER, water was amazing. Those floating letters were so cool. I vote water.
The music for antidote was the best, and I actually liked the visuals for that one too. The colors for aphorims were nice but I still prefer antidote.
The trilogy was spectacular from all directions. Graphics and music and everything. Kudos to ASD once more. All parts were nice.
Aaaaaaaaseeeemooooooooon the energy gal! Way to go. I can see why they always put you in charge of management. 🙂 Great event, great preps, great everything. Amazing selection of demos. I could hardly breathe throghout the evening. The ASD demos were all beautiful, and I have quite a few things to say about the Ocean Machine and Tokyo and some others when you get there.
Thanks for everything. 🙂
Ah no, you’re both wrong. You gotta shoot me. In the last 9 month I’ve left toronto only once. Guess when that was.
I realize you’re a student, but in the unlikely event you have excess cash floating around, please consider visting Pilgrimage 2006, North America’s *ONLY* demoparty. It may help to fuel your enthusiasm. (Which may or may not be a good thing.)
http://pilgrimage.scene.org/2006/index.html
And if you haven’t already, boot up a C64 and/or Amiga emulator and check out the early demoscene roots.
(I first became aware of demos in 1989 on my Amiga 500. Endless sinus scrollers, dizzying starfields, and bouncy copper bars. Demos sure have changed!)
Well my current horrible schedule has sworn not to let me get too close to the scene world; 🙂 however there might be other ppl here who would be interested in showing up to the event. [yeah? anyone?]
As for the emulators…yup they’re up & I’ve seen some of the older demos, it’s like going through pages of an old book. Bringing back the memories of C64 days. And of course the demos have changed more than a little. 🙂
Where is this event and when is it?
All info here:
http://pilgrimage.scene.org/2006/index.html
Anders u’re gonna go? 😀
I know I wanna go. But I don’t the lab stuff are gonna let me. U know what I mean.
I meant I don’t “think”.
I might be in the area at that time. If that happenes, I’ll go!
aMUSiC: Oh come on Music on the Moon ain’t cheesy! 🙂
Anders: Talk about being at the right place at the right time!
Aasemoon: I thiiiiiiiiink you should go!
Darril come on you know how it is! September is right the start of my new semester and with all that I have in my basket it’s impossible to leave Toronto at that time even for 5 minutes!
Anders let me know if you ended up there! 😀
OH YES YES YES YES We’re there finally! AMIGA? I can’t freakin’ believe it. That demo SO RULES! And of course Tokyo got tears in Eddie’s eyes. Awwwwwww
Ocean Machine broke my brains. unbelievable piece of work. What was that weird “thing” that your friend used to play the demo anyway? Was it some sort of an Amiga machine?
I forgot to say, Tokyo was so relaxing and so cool. Dude of course eddie was all emotional, he is from Tokyo!
Tokyo…oh man….if I were a girl I’d start stalking those guys.
Maybe I’ll do it anyways.
The black dancer took my heart away. I think I’m in love. Again!
Tokyo
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
AWWWWWWWWW
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
AWWWWWWWWWWWW
AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Ocean Machine, killer show with a killer music. F’kin awesome.
No funkin way that thing was on Amiga! How’s that even possible? I can’t believe it, it had such a high picture quality and the music was incrediblle!!!!!
Well they’ve made it possible. Why do u think it’s such a big deal dude?
Oh my lord don’t even start me on Ocean Machine’s music….
I wonder what the lyrics say…any info on that Aasemoon?
Not as of yet unfortunately…Looking for it though…
Yes please I wat to know what the girl says too.
TOKYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO was soooooooooooooooo beautiful! So lovable! SO relaxing! SO good!
CPC eh?
>:D
*Aasemoon pours a cold glass of water on Nick’s back*
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
well stop teasing already.
I love Tokyo too. I understand you! 😀
I so wish I was there to see it on the big screen.
CPC .. CDC.. what’s a CDC anyway?
Ehm…aaaaa….
Any sceners in the vicinity who might wanna answer the above?
http://www.pouet.net/faq.php#2
great blog by the way.
Thank you! 🙂
Hahahahahaha….the part about spelling skills and stuff made me laugh. 😀
Yup I can see what you mean after all. I managed to project tokyo on my room wall and hey it was great. How about you come over and arrange a demo show here ha?
How about you go to Toronto with us the next time hah?
Can somebody tell us what the Ocean Machine lyrics say?
I think those lyrics are in French right? Anyhow, Ocean Machine is quite the trip, and so is Tokyo. 2 very different demos, both great.
Whoa those rain drops going upwards (in Tokyo) were so damn romantic! The whole demo was so damn romantic actually. I so loved it.
Well, if you’re not familiar with the French language the ocean machine lyrics sound very exotic.
Translating them into english though, it kind of contrasts the whole feeling of the demo..
“Mustard is strong and that’s why it’s good”
Lyrics were sung by Linda, the composer’s (Yolk/CNCD) girlfriend’s little sister.
aMUSiC/ASD
Yup! aMUSiC knows all about all music, 😀 [& thensome!] Thank you!
Whoa such a demonstration of un-conditional love for mustard! All praise mustard. :>
aMUSiC, my man, I’ve always had it for mustard but now I feel different! 😛
Aasemoon, that half a gallon mustard thing is something that you should reconsider!
Kudos to this Yolk guy for such a great music. And more general kudos to TBL for such an awesome demo.
Tokyo is probably one of the most relaxing pieces of art I’ve ever seen! Very impressive.
Tokyo has rain going upwards? 😛
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL….
I totally get the part about speech problems!
I think the dancer’s moves were incredibly natural, and that was to me abit shocking. I loved it though.
The Tokyo demo is so relaxing and beautiful. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the music a lot.
As for the Ocean Machine demo, I think it’s quite a marvel. Did anyone notice the floating buldings?
Music….music for both! MUSIC MUSIC
Iconoclast and Tokyo eh? Didn’t I hear you say that you didn’t have the guts to post stuff on pouet BBS? :PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP
nymsys, indeed I don’t have the guts! I just had to post a response there but I’ll never post the kind of questions you guys asked me! 😛
HAHAHAHA HEHEHEHEHE HAHAHAHAHAHA HEHEHEHEH HEHEHEHEHEHE HAHAHAHAHAHA HEHEHEHEHE HAHAHAHAHAHA HEHEHEHEHE HAHAHAHA HEHEHEHEHEHEHE AHAHAHAH EHEHEHEHH HAAHAHA EHEHEHEHEHEHEHE that is definitely the neatest thing I’ve read in a while. You don’t have the guts HEHEHEHE
Whaaaa? 😛
Yeah we bite! =D
😀 Above comments are interesting.
YAY Tokyo for the great idea and atmosphere and music, and YAY Ocean Machine for the Dancer and music and everything.
Sceners bite then? :S
Well i dunno about that but I sure enjoyed watching productions like Iconoclast or Tokyo or Ocean Machine.
AAAAAASEMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON I’m your biggest fan! Your blog rules so! Keep writing. I don’t live in Canada so I can’t come to your demo-shows but I enjoy reading your weblog so much. Keep going, keep up the great job, keep bulding your robots!
Love
Andrew
Hi Andrew, thanks for visiting my blog, and thanks so much for your kind message. I’m very glad to know that you like this blog, and sure I’ll keep writing! 🙂
Yeah like me who should go figure who the musician for xplsv is hmmmmm 😛
That’s actually easy! What I meant is more like Mel’s questions…know what I mean? 😛
EHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I’m starting to seriously like you….
Join the club dude! 😉
ROFLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL Aasemoon I just read your update and I’m having a hard time breathing right now since I’ve been laughing my head of for the last few minutes……
Oh did I mention you rule?
What does Aasemoon mean anyway?
“Aasemoon” = Persian for “Sky”
Pronounced: “aa” like under + “se” like sector + “moon” like…well…the one up there!
wow so cool! I guess it makes sense..
Tokyo has a some nice sky scenes eh? 😉
hey hey. nice to see that there’s some demoscene related activity on the other side of the big pond. i’m one of the organizers of the only swiss demoparty http://www.buenz.li. so if you happen to be around in switzerland next year in august, be sure to check by. 🙂
anyhow, some groups i can recommend aswell are TPOLM, haujobb, calodox and marshals. some great productions from these groups are also on pouet.net. give it a try. 🙂
regards, genox
Hey genox, thanks for checking this place out! 🙂
TPLOM and haujobb are already on the favez list. Will definitely check out calodox and marshals. 🙂
Buenzli? hehe Aasemoon ain’t that what we watched on the web-tv last week while dealing with that evil pile of un-organized CDs? 😀
🙂 Yup! That was Buenzli.
The Heliosphere demo…wheeee…..
Interesting!
Aasemoon have we seen a demo from the guy above?
Ummmm….let me seee……
I thiiiiiink so,
Possibly “A Simple Way” by Vantage.
Ah, the demo I never figured why the 3 of you seemed to like so much!
I take it you mean me, Aasemoon and Soren? 😉
Well how about… because it has a kool concept, a kool design and a kool music?
Count me in too! 😉
Count me in too! 😉
Me too! 😀
Ok I’d like to break the thread here and get back to Tokyo, cause I still haven’t commented on that.
Tokyo = one hell of a demo! Beautiful and with great music. I also loved Ocean Machine, but Tokyo is just something different.
Off topic:
Anyone who wants to go for Calodox stuff, start here:

Still looking for the rest of them though….
On Topic:
TBL rules the world!
Ocean Machine kicks ass.
Now what exactly is it that you’re looking for?
I mean, if it’s any music related material I may be able to help you with that.
Once again: TBL rules.
Aase, Seth, Sor, why do I sense that you guys are talking about something that I don’t know about? 😉 😛
Yeah but xplsv rules too. Tokyo made me feel like I was actually in Tokyo
Rene, go here: http://www.last.fm/user/Aasemoon/
Tokyo projected on my wall right now…
Wow wow!
Comparing Tokyo with Ocean machine and Iconoclast?! No way!!
Really encouraging to read your comments about Tokyo guys, very glad to hear you liked it! 🙂
Cheers!
Well, once again, Tokyo rules. 🙂
[& thanks for checking us out.]
Hey is that one of the Tokyo producers? 🙂 Yup, that demo is certainly unique.
Way to go xplsv 😉
Great. I like the fact that someone from xplsv heard the noise. 🙂
Well it was a hell of a noise! 😀
Yeah I feel like I should go watch Tokyo for the 9435798th time now.
